Male Fertility Tests & Treatment

Semen analysis assesses fertility potential, sperm production, accessory gland function and ejaculatory capability. Components include: volume, pH, color, viscosity, concentration, total count, motility (movement) and morphology (shape). We perform this test using advanced microscopy, imaging equipment and software, and a computer-assisted semen analyzer.

We perform post-vasectomy semen analysis for patients who have undergone a vasectomy procedure. It involves the examination of a semen sample for the presence of sperm using American Urological Association criteria.

Semen may pass into the bladder instead of coming through the urethra (retrograde ejaculation. A urine sample is obtained and semen is extracted for analysis. The sample can then be prepared for use in in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI) treatments using the density gradient method.

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF) are effective methods of assisted reproduction. Sperm preparation, or sperm wash is performed using a swim-up or double density gradient method.

Cryopreservation (freezing) of sperm and reproductive tissue is a cornerstone of fertility preservation. We offer this service before a vasectomy or as therapeutic sperm banking before cancer treatments that could temporarily or permanently damage fertility. Samples are preserved in cryoprotective media and stored in liquid nitrogen for both short and long-term. Similar facilities have stored specimens for over 20 years, which resulted in successful pregnancies.

Blood tests can identify levels of the reproductive hormone testosterone and other related hormones. Hormone imbalances can lead to low sperm counts, cause erectile dysfunction and lower sex drive.

Blood tests can help detect genetic causes of infertility. These include a chromosome analysis and evaluation of the male sex chromosome (the Y chromosome). The results can determine if sperm production is affected by genetic information that is altered or missing.

Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images inside your body. A scrotal ultrasound can help find swollen veins or other problems in the testicles and supporting structures. A transrectal ultrasound allows us to check your prostate and look for blockages in the tubes that carry semen.
