What Is an MRI?
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that provides highly detailed images of the inside of your body. It uses strong magnets, radio waves, and a computer — without any radiation exposure.
Because of the powerful magnets, it's essential to inform your health care team about any metal in or on your body before the scan.
If this is your first MRI, you may be surprised by the noise during imaging. This sound simply indicates that the machine is capturing images. While loud, the procedure is completely painless.
What Should I Expect?
Understanding what happens during an MRI can help you feel more prepared for the procedure.
What Should I Wear?
Some fabrics contain metal fibers, so you will need to change into a hospital gown to prevent a possible burn. Your care team will also ask about any metal implants or devices to ensure your safety.
Why Am I Given Hearing Protection?
MRI machines produce loud noises during imaging. You will receive hearing protection and an alert button to signal if you need assistance. Your technologist will also check on you via a two-way speaker between image captures.
How Will I Be Positioned?
- You will lie on a table with a specialized coil placed over the area being scanned.
- The table will slide into a long tube, where you will remain for the duration of the exam.
How Long Does an MRI Take?
MRI scans typically last between 20 minutes and 2 hours, depending on the type of exam. Your technologist will provide an estimate beforehand.
Remaining completely still is crucial for capturing clear images. You may feel mild warmth during the scan, which is normal and should not be uncomfortable.
What If I Need Contrast for My MRI?
In some cases, your doctor may order an MRI with contrast to enhance image clarity. The contrast agent is administered through an IV during your exam.
MRI contrast is generally well tolerated, and side effects are rare. However, if you experience itching, throat swelling or coughing after the injection, notify your technologist immediately.
